Literature Reviews

If your company adopts a 'positive about disability' approach and welcomes disabled staff and visitors alike - then you should be having regular reviews of your literature.

These will also help you examine how well you are meeting the requirements of the DDA.

What is a Literature Review?

This usually involves a person qualified in the information needs of disabled people which included people with sensory loss, mobility/endurance difficulties, learning difficulties, cognitive impairments and mental ill health for example. They will look at context, language, clarity and presentation amongst other factors.

A literature review should compliment attitude and communication skills training commonly found on Disability Equality Courses.

What documents should we think about?

Basically everything your organisation holds should be equally accessible to disabled people.

Have you thought about some of these you may provide for customers:

  • Headed Paper, Invoices, Receipts, Compliment Slips, Business Cards, e-mails.
  • Promotional leaflets, videos, cds / dvds, postcards, brochures etc.
  • Web-sites,
  • Complaints or ther procedures, terms and conditions, contracts, policies.

then, there are all the documents, training packages, recruitment process documents, pay-slips, computer software and host of other things which provide disabled staff with information.
